Frank Grossell (409 Nichols Street. Defiance, Ohio) the photographer, had an experience with a tramp that will not soon be forgotten by the tramp. Frank's wife was away from home and he was busy getting breakfast when a tramp knocked at the kitchen door. The wanderer was invited in and Frank at once locked the door, the latch being broken
"Why did you lock that door for" asked the tramp!!
"Some people say that I am crazy" responded Frank, who was carving bread with an ugly looking knife, " I locked that door to keep out the police."
By this time the tramp was nearly sweating blood and he wanted to go but Frank held him with the most insane looking eyes. As the potatoes fried and eggs boiled, Frank gave vent with numerous blood curding threats that stood the tramps hair on end and he longed for one breath of fresh air, but his host was unmoved. Then breakfast was served. The potato were piled high on the tramps plate and he was served with eggs, bread, butter and coffee. After he had taken a bite or two he wanted to go out and get a drink of water, but Frank would not have it that way. He had water in the house. And then he forced that poor tramp to stuff himself. He cleaned up the plate, after plate of potatoes, eggs and bread and butter, and drank six or seven cups of coffee. When it was all over Frank took up his savage looking knife and requested the tramp to go to the corner of the house and see if the rows of hooks on the wall, he said "I want to hang their livers and hearts on those hooks."
The door was opened and the tramp shot out like a tornado and cleared the alley fence at a single bound, but there the poor fellow collapsed. The thought that he had been shut up with a mad man for an hour was to much for him and he wept. He finally got away, and it is said, Frank has gained ten pounds by reason of the laugh he had over the tramp.
